The community is also home to many BC Ferry Terminals, including Departure Bay, Duke Point, and the downtown area, and private passenger ferries are available between Nanaimo Harbour and Protection Island. In addition, residents wanting to travel between Swy-a-Lana Lagoon and Saysuthun can enjoy a seasonal passenger ferry.

Nanaimo Regional Transit provides bus transportation in the area, and driving residents can use Highways 1, 19, and 19A to get around the city.

Nanaimo Local Highlights

• The Pacific Biological Station is on the north shore of the neighbourhood of Departure Bay. It is the oldest fisheries research center on the Pacific Coast and is part of eight other scientific facilities.
• Pipers Lagoon Park offers residents a beautiful waterfront park with hiking trails, birdwatching opportunities, and the perfect place to watch sunrises and sunsets.
• The Nanaimo Yacht Club offers residents a place to go for boating opportunities, clubhouse activities, and recreational venues.

Nanaimo School Information

Nanaimo is home to more than 30 elementary and secondary schools, many of which are public and operated by the School District 68 Nanaimo-Ladysmith. Private schools serving residents include Aspengrove School, Island ConnectED K-12 School, and Nanaimo Christian School. The Conseil Scolaire Francophone de la Colombie-Britannique manages and operates the two Francophone schools - École Océane primary school and the École secondaire de Nanaimo.

Vancouver Island University's main campus is located in Nanaimo and offers residents the opportunity to register for continuing education classes or degree programs.
